INTRODUCTION

Fluid Form 1 :

New Architecture and Art in Arabia and the United Arab Emirates

Fluid Form 1, is an exhibition that provides a unique comparison and review of contemporary architecture and art from the Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It is comprised of two sections, one that selectively examines contemporary art and architecture from the Arab countries and how this reflects, influences and interacts with the dynamics of human existence, changing populations and the transformation of identity in an age of global communication. The other section is a visual survey of the past, present and future of urban design in the Gulf area.

In commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Korea-Arab Emirates diplomatic relations, "Fluid Form", brings to the Korean public an opportunity to review the cultural complex of of the U.A.E. and Arabian culture. Importantly, this project creates a bridge between Korea and the United Arab Emirates in terms of encouraging interest in further cultural, economic, tourist and diplomatic exchanges.

For the period from 1970s through the mid-1980s, Korea emerged as a newly industrial country and construction power owing primarily to the construction boom in the Middle East. However, the architecture of this period were supplier-centered buildings, not human-centered urban spaces and architecture. Today, creative urban planning considers the many identities that are required to create an environment that is pragmatic and aesthetically uplifting as well as being sympathetic to human needs. This approach is being expressed in some of the most remarkable architecture that has appeared over the last two decades for which the Arab Emirates and other Arab countries has become a beacon of excellence.

In particular, The United Arab Emirates, have invited world leading architects, planners and urban designers, world-class universities and other educational institutions in order that they may contribute in the construction of a city centered on cultural convergence and the development of knowledge and quality human resources. Despite the lingering effects of the global economic crisis, the Arab Emirates endeavours to accommodate international students, researchers and artists through its, "Alternative Diplomacy" to posit a new creative city, transforming the Arabian architecture and art map continuously.

"Fluid Form" celebrates a new emphasis in architecture in creating environments that are more humanly sympathetic. It showcases and makes comparisons of some of the most remarkable architecture and related art that has emerged from these areas in recent years. It may also thereby suggest and inspire new directions and some creative alternatives for Korea-U.A.E cultural exchanges focused on architecture and urban planning.
